Follow Me

Follow me into the swell
Be not afraid
Lift your feet from the shore
And join me in the waves
Follow me into the dark
Be not afraid
I will give you courage
And turn night into day
I am peace in the storm
I am love in the fight
I am the morning sun
In the darkest night
I am king of kings
Lord of everything
Yet I am close to you
Follow me toward the sick
Be not afraid
The strong don't need a doctor
It's sinners I'm here to save
I am peace in the storm
I am love in the fight
I am the morning sun
In the darkest night
I am king of kings
Lord of everything
Yet I am close to you
Who is this, who is this
That even the winds and the seas obey him
Who is this, who is this
That even the winds and the seas obey him
Who is this, who is this
That even the winds and the seas obey him
Who is this, who is this
That even the winds and the seas obey him
And he said
Fear not for I am, fear not for I am
I am peace in the storm
I am love in the fight
I am the morning sun
In the darkest night
I am king of kings
Lord of everything
Yet I am close to you
Follow me up to the cross
Be not afraid
Lift your head, breathe your last
There's life beyond the grave
REFLECTION
Can we fully grasp the level of crazy in Jesus’s command to “follow him”? It’s a common refrain of his, repeated over twenty times in the gospels. Surely, he must mean it. But how on earth does his call impact us?
Let’s look at Matthew, the Jewish man who collected taxes from his own people for Roman Empire. When he heard this call, he didn’t hesitate. He didn’t ask “why,” “when,” or “how.” He simply followed.
We know how things turned out for Matthew. He became a disciple of Jesus and a key figure in the early church. He wrote the first gospel and recorded some of Jesus’s most important teachings. But let’s remember that he left a comfortable life to wander with Jesus. He witnessed the crucifixion and faced the chaos that followed. Ultimately, he is believed to have died a martyr’s death in Ethiopia. Yes, he suffered. But he also found something worth living and dying for.
So, what does it truly mean to “follow me”? And are we ready to accept that challenge? Following Jesus likely involves a commitment to discipleship, continual transformation, service, and building relationships.
Whether you’re a despised Roman tax collector or a respected business professional, let’s embrace the call to follow him.
